Highlighting Health with Film
Capstone Project
Mental illness has affected in some way probably every person you know. Why is it still taboo to discuss such a prevalent and human struggle? Recognition of issues is the first step to normalization and more widespread treatment. Creating art to spread awareness is one of the oldest techniques used for social progression, because it can be felt on an emotional level. With my project, I want to work toward a world where there is no stigma against those with mental illnesses, and everyone is able to access the aid that they need. I will do my part by writing and filming a movie focused on a girl who faces mental disorders and finds help in her support system and therapy. Many films centered on mental health involve older people, so I believe that teens and kids should receive more representation in this area. Basically, my hope is that young people watching my film will either relate to or empathize with the main character, and begin to see that mental illness is not something to be ashamed of.
